Craniofacial and cleft advancements

The ICCI is a research lab within SickKids Hospital dedicated to the advancement of craniofacial, cleft and plastic surgery through technological innovation. Our focus is the development of novel solutions within the fields of surgical robotics, minimally invasive surgery, medical device design and simulation. 

Our lab comprises the expertise and equipment to develop systems using three-dimensional (3D) printing, advanced machining and manufacturing capability, robotic integration, virtual environments, machine learning as well as peri-operative patient specific planning. 

Our mission is to advance these technologies to improve the care of patients with craniofacial, cleft and plastic surgery presentations.

ABOUT DR. PODOLSKY

ABOUT DR. PODOLSKY

Dale Podolsky MD, PhD, FRCSC

Dr. Podolsky is a craniofacial surgeon at The Hospital for Sick Children. He completed his undergraduate studies at Western University completing concurrent degrees in both mechanical engineering and physics prior to entering medical school at The University of Toronto.

He completed residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at The University of Toronto while enrolled in the surgeon scientist training program completing a PhD in biomedical engineering. Following residency training, Dr. Podolsky completed fellowship training in craniofacial surgery at The University of Washington in Seattle. During Dr. Podolsky’s PhD he developed a novel robotic instrument for cleft palate repair using a high fidelity cleft palate simulator. The simulator was commercialized as part of a company Dr. Podolsky founded. The company was later sold and the simulator has been utilized in over 60 countries. 

Dr. Podolsky strives to merge his extensive experience in engineering and surgery to develop innovative technology to improve the care of cleft, craniofacial and plastic surgery patients.

The ICCI is lead by Dr. Podolsky with a focus in surgical robotics, surgical simulation, minimally invasive surgery and medical device design.
